During this time many Americans enjoyed a period of unprecedented prosperity. With the booming economy the demand for new homes grew rapidly. Many young couples moved to suburbs and bought their first homes with the help of the GI Bill. With the returning soldiers the bill enabled many to receive low-interest loans and cost of college paid for. Also, the passing of the Federal Highway Act of 1956 promoted suburban growth by allowing many to commute to the cities back to the suburbs.
